GMAZ Takes Legal Action Against Social Media Activist Rutendo Matinyarare

The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) has initiated legal proceedings in the High Court to halt social media activist Rutendo Matinyarare from disseminating what it deems as defamatory content against its members.

Allegedly, Mr. Matinyarare has been publishing articles through his online platform, making claims perceived as harmful to GMAZ and its members.

The association contends that these defamatory publications, including a recent tweet posted on March 1, have the potential to tarnish its reputation.

In the specific tweet mentioned, titled “Innscor GMOs risk exposing Zimbabweans, Zambians, Kenyans & others to biological weapons” and “@matinyarare titled Response to Grain Millers Association,” Mr. Matinyarare raised concerns regarding GMOs and the statements made by GMAZ President, Tafadzwa Musarara.

In response, GMAZ has filed a court action, naming Mr. Matinyarare and the National Biotechnology Authority of Zimbabwe as respondents. The association seeks an interdict to prevent Mr. Matinyarare from publishing further defamatory content until the resolution of the case.

According to court documents, GMAZ argues that the defamatory tweets remain accessible online, potentially causing ongoing harm to its reputation. The association fears that Mr. Matinyarare may continue to post damaging content, to the detriment of its members.

This legal action comes after Innscor Africa obtained a takedown order against Mr. Matinyarare for videos in which he criticized the company and its founder, Mr. Zinona ‘Zed’ Koudounaris.

The Johannesburg High Court ruled these claims as defamatory, opening Mr. Matinyarare to potential damages claims and legal expenses.
