The initial victim, Wishteck Motors Car Rental, represented by Saunders Chiza, reported the incidents to the authorities. According to court proceedings, the gang collaborated with Batsirai Mhungu, already implicated, to execute their scheme against the car rental agency.

Using fraudulent credentials under the guise of Kenneth Change, one of the gang members signed a rental agreement for a white Nissan X-trail. Despite the agreed return date of March 3rd, the vehicle was not returned as scheduled.

Subsequently, the gang fabricated a registration book and sold the car to Cosmo Chirombo for US$8000. Upon discovery of the crime, Wishteck Motors Car Rental alerted the authorities, leading to an investigation and the eventual recovery of the vehicle.

Austin and his associates are alleged to have utilized the same method to steal nine additional vehicles. They are currently awaiting a bail hearing scheduled for today.
