POTRAZ Considers Tariff Adjustments To Protect Zimbabwe's ICT Sector's Sustainability

THE Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe  (POTRAZ) is considering changing tariffs to maintain the sector’s viability

The director-general of POTRAZ, Dr. Gift Machengete, stressed the vital significance of preserving a strong Information Communication Technology (ICT) sector for the benefit of the general people and national development goals during a recent engagement with stakeholders in Harare.

“As regulators, we are compelled to explore tariff adjustments to shield our sector from potential collapse,” said Dr. Machengete.

He emphasized the critical role that the ICT industry plays in advancing economic development, encouraging innovation, and raising living standards around the world.

These developments do have a financial cost, though. In order to stay competitive and adaptable to changing social expectations, the ICT sector necessitates large capital investments for the creation of services, maintenance, and infrastructure.

Tariff income shortfalls may make it more difficult for ICT operators to make investments in R&D, expand network coverage to underserved areas, or upgrade infrastructure. Consumer priorities include accessibility and cost, yet stable income sources are necessary to maintain high-quality ICT infrastructure.

Raising tariffs may seem paradoxical in a world where affordability is important, Dr. Machengete conceded. Striking a balance between guaranteeing the sector’s long-term sustainability and granting access to necessary ICT services is crucial, though.

He emphasized that tariff adjustments must be carefully considered, keeping in mind the needs of consumers and the realities of the industry.

Speaking about price structure transparency, Dr. Machengete stressed how crucial it is to provide customers the power to hold operators responsible.

The relationship between the customer and the service provider is weakened by a lack of openness, especially when it comes to alerts of service interruptions.

Dr. Machengete also brought up the topic of disappearing data as another important issue that requires attention.
