Trojan Mine uproar: 37 women detained for protesting husbands' unpaid wages

BINDURA – Thirty-seven women were arrested by police during a demonstration at Trojan Mine where they were protesting the non-payment of wages owed to their spouses.

The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) said it had stepped in to offer legal support to the demonstrators who claim their actions were within their constitutional rights.

The women, wives of miners who have not received their salaries for an extended period, rallied against the poor working conditions at the mine. Despite the peaceful nature of their protest, they were arrested, highlighting the ongoing battle for workers’ rights in Zimbabwe.

In a statement, ZLHR said: “Our lawyers are currently assisting 37 women arrested for demonstrating against Trojan mine. They were expressing their grievances as the mine has failed to pay their husbands for several months.”

The ZLHR condemned the arrests, stressing the need to respect the fundamental rights to protest and express grievances.
