2 Beitbridge Man Charged with Attempted Murder of Ward Councillor

Ashley Ndou, 23, and Prospect Ziyengwa, 27, both of Beitbridge, are accused of trying to murder  Mr. Takavingei Mahachi, a Ward 3 councillor, on Independence Day by stabbing him at his house in the Tshidixwa district.

They allegedly attacked Mr. Takavingei Mahachi, leaving significant slashes on his left arm and chest, and then fled the scene with the help of a third man who is still at large.

Ndou and Ziyengwa did not have to enter a plea when they appeared in local regional court before resident judge Mr. Takudzwa Gwazemba of Beitbridge. They were charged with attempted murder. Their custody was remanded until May 6.

The three males approached Councillor Mahachi’s home at around nine o’clock on Independence Day, according to the prosecution, which was headed by Mrs. Tsitsi Mutukwa. They ambushed him close to his parked car, but a neighbour saw them there.

When Councillor Mahachi confronted the three, the third man—who is still at large—attacked him and stabbed him in the chest. He tried to protect himself, but the attackers outnumbered him and kept stabbing him at the same time with their knives.

When the attackers saw that Councillor Mahachi was not going to back down, they took to the dark. After the attack, Mr. Mahachi was transported right away to the hospital for medical attention after suffering injuries to his left arm and chest.
